Description: The Betatrophin protein, also known as the hepatocellular carcinoma-associated protein TD26, is an adipocyte- and liver-enriched insulin targeted gene that is thought to play a role in lipid metabolism be regulating serum triglyceride levels (1,2). Betatrophin is closely related to the angiopoietin-like (ANGPTL) protein family. Betatrophin mRNA increases in the cold environment and after treatment with a high-fat diet, while its mRNA levels decrease in response to fasting, suggesting that it may play a role in mediating thermogenesis and energy homeostasis (3).

Description: Bnip3L antibody detects human origin. Members in the Bcl-2 family are critical regulators of apoptosis by either inhibiting or promoting cell death. Bcl-2 homology 3 (BH3) domain is a potent death domain. BH3 domain containing pro-apoptotic proteins, including Bad, Bax, Bid, Bik, Hrk, Nip3, and Bim, form a growing subclass of the Bcl-2 family. A novel BH3 domain containing protein was recently identified and designated Bnip3L, Bnip3alpha, and Nix (for Nip3-like protein X). Bnip3L/Bnip3alpha/Nix is a homolog of the E1B 19K/Bcl-2 binding and pro-apoptotic protein Bnip3. Overexpression of Bnip3L induces apoptosis. Bnip3L interacts with and overcomes suppresses by Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL. Bnip3L is localized in mitochondria. The messenger RNA of Bnip3L is ubiquitously expressed in human tissues. Bnip3L and Bnip3 form a new subfamily of the pro-apoptotic mitochondrial proteins. Anti-Bnip3L antibodies are ideal for investigators involved in Apoptosis research.

Description: CHD proteins belong to a superfamily of proteins of ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling enzymes that have a unique combination of functional domains, including two N-terminal chromodomains, a SNF2-like ATPase/helicase domain and a DNA-binding domain. These proteins are thought to play a role in early embryonic development by affecting chromatin structure and gene expression. Mutations in one member of this family, CHD7, result in CHARGE syndrome. It colocalizes with embryonic stem (ES) cell master regulators OCT4/POU5F1, SOX2, and NANOG and is thought to modulate ES-specific gene transcription. Together with SOX2, CHD7 has been suggested to also regulate several human disease genes.

Description: CKIP1 was identified through a yeast-two hybrid screening as a protein that would interact with only one of the two catalytic subunits of the casein kinase 2 complex. CKIP1 is a pleckstrin homology domain-containing protein localized within the nucleus and at the plasma membrane that interacts with CK2alpha but not CK2alpha', and is thought to play a role in targeting CK2alpha to a particular cellular location. CKIP1 has been implicated in muscle differentiation and the regulation of cell morphology and actin cytoskeleton. CKIP1 can also interact with other proteins such as ATM, an upstream kinase of p53, and recruit the nuclear ATM to the plasma membrane, suggesting CKIP1 may regulate ATM function through re-localizing ATM. CKIP1 can also form a complex with the kinase AKT, leading to a down-regulation of PI3K/AKT signaling and suppression of tumor growth in vivo.

Description: CEACAM5 is a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) family, which belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily (1,2). CEACAM proteins are involved in cell-cell recognition and modulate cellular processes that range from the shaping of tissue architecture and neovascularization to the regulation of insulin homeostasis and T-cell proliferation (2). CEACAM5 has been shown to be overexpressed in a majority of carcinomas and has been suggested to be a intercellular adhesion molecule involved in cancer invasion and metastasis (3).

Description: CLAUDIN4 is an integral membrane protein belonging to the claudin family, a family of cellular adhesion molecules that are components of tight junctions. CLAUDIN4 is a component of tight junction strands and may play a role in internal organ development and function during pre- and postnatal life. The CLAUDIN4 gene is deleted in Williams-Beuren syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting multiple systems. CLAUDIN4 is frequently overexpressed in ovarian and other epithelial cancers.

Description: CCAAT enhancer binding proteins (CEBPs) are a family of transcription factors that all contain a highly conserved, basic-leucine zipper domain at the C-terminus that is involved in dimerization and DNA binding. At least six members of the family have been isolated and characterized to date (CEBP alpha to CEBP zeta). CEBPD is a leucine zipper (LZ) DNA-binding protein that regulates gene expression in a variety of tissues including liver, adipose, lung and intestine. CEBPD is an important transcriptional activator in the regulation of genes involved in immune and inflammatory responses and has been reported to possess many tumor suppressor-like properties.

Description: Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is related to many diseases, such as cancer. Apoptosis is triggered by a variety of stimuli including members in the TNF family and can be prevented by the inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) proteins. IAP proteins form a conserved gene family that binds to and inhibits cell death proteases. The two isoforms of c-IAP (c-IAP1 and c-IAP2) are structurally related to XIAP, containing 3 baculoviral IAP repeat (BIR) motifs that are essential and sufficient for the binding and inhibition of caspases-3, -7. The c-IAPs can associate with the death receptor TNF-R2, and mediate the ubiquitinization of TRAF2 following the binding of TNF-a by its receptor. Omi, a negative regulator of c-IAP, inhibits its activity by catalytically cleaving c-IAP. Another negative regulator, Smac/DIABLO, acts by enhancing the auto-ubiquitization activity of c-IAP.

Description: The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily, and a member of the MRP subfamily that is involved in multi-drug resistance (1,2). CFTR functions as a chloride channel and controls the regulation of other transport pathways (3). Mutations in this gene are associated with the autosomal recessive disorder cystic fibrosis, the most common, fatal, inherited disease of caucasian populations (1).

Description: CENPW was initially identified as a gene that was upregulated in multiple cancers, and whose overexpression in mouse fibroblast cells gave rise to distinct cancer-specific phenotypes. It was later found to be a nuclear protein that associated with CENPT, a component of CENPA nucleosome complex in the centromere, and is required for proper kinetochore function. CENPW also specifically interacts with the nucleolar phosphoprotein nucleophosmin, also known as B23 It has been suggested that nucleophosmin functions in the assembly of the kinetochore by interacting with CENPW during interphase. Overexpression of CENPW in the SKOV-3 human ovarian cancer cell line as well as in the zebrafish embryo led to apoptosis, suggesting that high levels of CENPW induces apoptotic cell death.

Description: CLEC2A (C-type lectin domain family 2 member A), also known as PILAR (proliferation-induced lymphocyte-associated receptor) is involved in modulating T-cell expansion. It is a 32 kDa single-pass type II membrane protein that contains one C-type lectin domain in its extracellular region and belongs to the CTL/CTLD superfamily. CLEC2A is mainly expressed in skin and highly expressed in CD8(+), B lymphocytes and naive CD4(+) T cells. Manipulation of CLEC2A signaling may be important for treatment of autoimmune diseases and cancer.

Description: Apoptosis plays a major role in normal organism development, tissue homeostasis, and removal of damaged cells. Disruption of this process has been implicated in a variety of diseases such as cancer. Aven is a recently discovered protein that blocks apoptosis induced by Apaf-1 and caspase-9. It is thought that Aven functions by binding to Bcl-xL, an antiapoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family, and to Apaf-1, possibly interfering with the ability of Apaf-1 to self-associate, suggesting that Aven impedes Apaf-1-mediated caspase activation. Higher levels of Aven mRNA are seen in patients with acute leukemia than in control patients, suggesting that Aven may be useful as a prognostic indicator in leukemia patients.

Description: Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, killing more than 30, 000 people per year in the USA. Novel influenza virus strains caused by genetic drift and viral recombination emerge periodically to which humans have little or no immunity, resulting in devastating pandemics. Influenza A can exist in a variety of animals; however, it is in birds that all subtypes, including the so-called "avian flu" or H5N1, can be found. These subtypes are classified based on the combination of the virus coat glycoproteins hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) subtypes. One of the less studied proteins encoded by, but not incorporated in, the influenza virus is the nonstructural protein (NS) 1. NS1 counters cellular antiviral activities and acts as a virulence factor. It can bind to double-stranded RNA and sequester it from 2'-5'OAS, preventing the activation of the RNAse L, which normally acts to degrade RNA and prevent virus replication. NS1 also binds to and inhibits the anti-viral protein kinase PKR.

Description: Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, killing more than 30, 000 people per year in the USA. Novel influenza virus strains caused by genetic drift and viral recombination emerge periodically to which humans have little or no immunity, resulting in devastating pandemics. Influenza A can exist in a variety of animals; however it is in birds that all subtypes can be found. These subtypes are classified based on the combination of the virus coat glycoproteins hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) subtypes. During 1997, an H5N1 avian influenza virus was determined to be the cause of death in 6 of 18 infected patients in Hong Kong. There was some evidence of human to human spread of this virus, but it is thought that the transmission efficiency was fairly low. HA interacts with cell surface proteins containing oligosaccharides with terminal sialyl residues. Virus isolated from a human infected with the H5N1 strain in 1997 could bind to oligosaccharides from human as well as avian sources, indicating its species-jumping ability.
