Description: The enzyme UDP-Glucose 4-Epimerase (GALE) is a homodimeric epimerase found in bacterial, plant and mammalian cells. UDP-Glucose 4-Epimerase performs the final step in the Leloir pathway of Galactose metabolism, it catalyzes two distinct but analogous reactions: the epimerization of UDP-Gglucose to UDP-Galactose and the epimerization of UDP-N-Acetylglucosamine to UDP-N-Acetylgalactosamine. The bifunctional nature of the enzyme has the important metabolic consequence that mutant cells (or individuals) are dependent not only on exogenous galactose, but also on exogenous N-acetylgalactosamine as a necessary precursor for the synthesis of glycoproteins and glycolipids.

Supplier: MP Biomedicals
Description: Melibiose is a reducing disaccharide formed by an alpha-1,6 linkage between galactose and glucose (D-Gal-α(1→6)-D-Glc). It can be formed by invertase mediated hydrolysis of raffinose, which produces melibiose and fructose. Melibiose can be broken down into its component saccharides, glucose and galactose, by the enzyme alpha-galactosidase.

Description: Galactocerebrosides are abundant sphingolipids of the myelin membrane of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system and are also present in small amounts in kidney. The key enzymatic step in the biosynthesis of galactocerebrosides consists of the transfer of galactose to ceramide catalyzed by UDP-galactose ceramide galactosyltransferase (CGT, EC 2.4.1.45). The enzyme UGT8 is the first involved in complex lipid biosynthesis in the myelinating oligodendrocyte.Galactocerebrosides are abundant sphingolipids of the myelin membrane of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system and are also present in small amounts in kidney.
