Sodium cholate

Cholic acid is a biochemical solubilizing agent (a non-ionic, non-denaturing detergent). Occurs inconjugation with glycine or taurine in bile of most vertebrates.

  • Critical Micelle Concentration (CMC): 14mM

Cholic acid is used in the solubilization of membrane-bound proteins in their native state. It is a component for the preparation of liposomes. It has also been used in a study to investigate the elastic deformable vesicles, transfersomes, for transdermal drug delivery.
Cholate is a bile acid produced in liver during cholesterol breakdown. Cholate downregulates cholesterol-7-α-hydroxylase (rate-limiting step in bile acid synthesis). Cholate, an anionic detergent, is used alone and in combination with urea to extract and reconstitute membrane proteins and protein complexes.

Cholic acid is used in the solubilization of membrane-bound proteins in their native state. It is a component for the preparation of liposomes.
