Retinol is one of the animal forms of vitamin A. It is a diterpenoid and an alcohol.
Retinol is an effective antioxidant displaying lipoperoxy radical scavenging activity. The interactions between Retinol and Vitamin E (α-tocopherol) in suppressing lipid peroxidation were observed in bovine retinal membrane preparations. It may influence the production of transition vesicles by stimulating the activity of a protein disulfide isomeraselike activity involved in vesicle formation. Retinol (10 µM) stimulated DNA synthesis and possibly repair mechanisms in Sertoli cells of rat.
Biochem/physiol Actions: Ligand for both the retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and the retinoid X receptor (RXR) that act as transcription factors to regulate the growth and differentiation of normal and malignant cells.
Soluble in chloroform (50 mg/ml), absolute alcohol, methanol, ether, fats and oils; practically insoluble in water and glycerol.
