1-O-Octadecyl-2-O-methyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine (O-1415) and octadecylphosphorylcholine are efficient anticancer agents. However, as the choline derivatives are rather toxic, homologs have been synthesized in which the nitrogen atom of choline has been exchanged for a phosphorus atom. The resulting compounds were less toxic and retained the cytotoxic activity.

Edelfosine showed an antimetastatic effect in experimental tumors. Moreover, according to the results of Varela et al., the phospholipid could find use as an orally administered antileishmanial drug. Our product O-1385 corresponds to a pure enantiomer of edelfosine.
